Take Part in the Summer Stories Audio Drama Residency and Create Your Own Captivating Audio Drama.

Sunderland, June 2023 - Calling all aspiring writers and audio enthusiasts! We are thrilled to announce the Summer Stories audio drama residency, where you'll have the incredible opportunity to bring your imagination to life and develop an original audio drama under the guidance of the esteemed award-winning audio producer, Jay Sykes.

Spanning four workshops, this residency will take you on a creative journey from the initial idea to the final recording of your very own audio drama, inspired by the captivating stories surrounding Sunderland's parish church. Together, we will explore the intricacies of scriptwriting, delve into the art of sound design, and master the aspects of performance and directing, all with the ultimate goal of creating a remarkable audio drama that you can be proud of.

Each workshop is designed to equip you with the essential skills and knowledge needed to craft a compelling audio drama. Here's an overview of what you can expect from each session:

Session 1 - Basics of Audio Drama - Saturday 3rd June 2023 - 10am-2pm


- Learn about the unique qualities of audio drama as a medium.
- Discover the key building blocks of dramatic storytelling.
- Engage in discussions and analysis of various audio drama examples.
- Participate in introductory short writing activities.
- Craft the initial drafts of your ideas.

Session 2 - Script Draft Workshop - Sunday 10th June 2023 - 1pm-4pm

- Collaboratively workshop and refine your initial drafts, transforming them into longer scripts.
- Explore character development, story arcs, and the art of strengthening your narrative.
- Begin the process of casting characters and curating sound design and music.

Session 3 - Recording & Performing Workshop - Saturday 17th June 2023 - 10am-2pm**

- Receive your polished and edited scripts from Jay Sykes.
- Acquire knowledge on recording techniques using industry-standard audio equipment.
- Learn the art of directing actors in an audio drama setting, with the participation of local performers or willing participants.
- Commence the exciting task of recording your audio dramas.

Session 4 - Recording & Performing Workshop 2 - Sunday 18th June 2023 - 10am-2pm**

- Continue working with performances and recordings, ensuring the highest quality.
- Dedicate time to capturing incidental noises, background characters, and essential sound effects (foley).

Listening Party - Date TBC

- Join us for an open listening party at Seventeen Nineteen, where your hard work and creativity will be celebrated.
- Share your completed audio dramas and revel in the joy of your remarkable accomplishments.
