Historic Church Tour 2023: Angels, Demons, and Knights in Herefordshire
Step back in time and enjoy the stories the characterful carvings have to tell throughout the churches of Herefordshire.
The first stop will be the Church of St Cosmas & St Damian, Stretford, featuring two of the largest 16th-century timber screens in CCT’s care, as well as 600-year-old tomb figures to the patron saints of doctors.
Next we will explore The Church, Moreton Jeffries, a long, low, medieval church, whose dedication has been lost in time, has an attractive wooden bell turret and is set in a pretty field.
The third visit will take place at St Cuthbert’s Church, Holme Lacy. Located in a pretty setting on a bend in the River Wye, looking across to the Herefordshire hills. The wealthy Scudamore family were patrons of this secluded stone church for over 500 years, and their monuments are a spectacular treasure.
Then we will visit Yatton Chapel, a tiny gem of a church, built by the Normans shortly after the Conquest has simple and enchanting elements.
The Historic Church Tour will then finish with a visit to St Michael’s Church, Michaelchurch is said to have been founded nearly 1,000 years ago in 1056 and displays 13th-century wall paintings. This lovely church hugs the side of a remote valley.
Travel: Depart Hereford train station at 10:00, returning to the station by 17:30
