Historic Church Tour 2023: Lady Anne Clifford, Aristocrat and Historical Scholar, in Cumbria - PAST
Explore the sites that tell the tale of Lady Anne Clifford and her 40-year-long fight for her inheritance rights.
The first stop will be St Ninian’s Church, Brougham, originally a Norman church but was completely rebuilt in the 17th-century by Lady Anne Clifford, whose unique approach can be seen inside and out.
We then will visit St Wilfrid’s Church, Brougham. At the time of writing, this church is listed on Historic England’s Heritage at Risk Register; however, it is soon to come into the care of CCT where it will undergo an extensive repair programme.
The next stop will be Brougham Hall, following on from many owners and uses, this site underwent one of England’s most ambitious restoration projects in the 1980s. It was built in the 14th century and has a fascinating history.
The final stop will be St Lawrence’s Church, Appleby, featuring a monument to Lady Anne Clifford, it also boasts a screen from the 16th-century and a clock dated 1699.
