“A successful career, but family loss”
John Lund (the son of John Lund, a baker and Sarah) was baptised, married Mary Ettles and had a total of nine of his own children baptised at Holy Trinity, Goodramgate.
John was a church warden for Holy Trinity and a highly regarded turner in the City. His first three children were born between 1773 and 1776 (Mary – baptised 1 August 1773, John – baptised 8 January 1775 and George Faceby – baptised 4 Novemeber 1776). In 1777, John (senior) was sent to Nuremberg, Germany to inspect turnery manufactories. His trip was a great success and on his return he was presented with the Freedom of York by the Lord Mayor.
By 1780, the family had welcomed two more children (Thomas – baptised 1778 and Sarah - baptised October 1779). Sarah did not live long and died on 30 November 1779. John owned and worked from a property on Goodramgate. Business must have been good as he had an apprentice. By 1785, he was building two houses on Goodramgate on the site of a single dwelling that he had owned and then demolished. The family had had three more children (William – baptised 1781, Sarah Fasby – baptised 1783, Ann – baptised 30 March 1785, but lived only until 8 April 1785).
John and Mary’s final child, Richard, was born and buried in 1786 (baptised 5 January 1786 and died 2 March 1786), Mary died in 1787 (aged only 31). With six surviving children, 8 months later John was remarried to Jinny (Jenny) Sugden. Together they had one child, Charles, who died (aged 2 months) in 1788. Jinny was buried at Holy Trinity in 1794.
John spent his later years in Huntington but was buried at Holy Trinity alongside his wife, Mary, their three babies who did not survive and his son, George Faceby, who died in 1800 aged 23.
Records don’t reveal what happened to his oldest daughter, Mary, but John (senior) was survived by his oldest son, John (junior) (who died in 1851), Thomas (died in 1845), William (died 1862) and Sarah Fasby (married Thomas Wilson 1806, died 1852).
