Kent: Take a Dickensian stroll in the North Kent Marshes

Visit the churches and landscape that inspired Dickens

The North Kent Marshes were a popular stomping ground of celebrated author Charles Dickens, who lived at Gads Hill Place in dearby Higham.

This 11.5 mile walk, which can be enjoyed in sections, starting at Higham Station explores this landscape and visits St James' Church at Cooling, the setting for the opening scene of Great Expectations, and St Mary's at Higham, where Dickens' daughter married the painter Charles Allston Collins.
