St Peter's Church, Edlington

The Churches Conservation Trust's first church

In 1971 St Peter’s was the first church to be vested with the Churches Conservation Trust (then the Redundant Churches Fund), after the parish of Edlington St Peter became redundant in 1962. After closure the condition of the church deteriorated and in 1966 the roof was removed and the plan was to demolish all except the tower. After vesting with the CCT the roof was replaced and the church restored.

St Peter’s, built from locally quarried magnesian limestone, sits proudly on a hill, surrounded by fields to the north and in other directions by the houses of the village of Old Edlington. This magnificent 12thcentury church consists of a nave, chancel, tower and a north aisle and contains several pieces of curious Norman carving, including a chancel arch decorated with several rows of chevrons.

The chancel, nave and lower part of the west tower (later altered) date to the 12th century. Whilst the belfry stage of the tower and majority of the windows are of Perpendicular style (15th century). The elaborate carved south doorway, chancel arch and corbels are fine examples of Romanesque carving. The South Door in the porch has wonderful carved beakhead and zigzag details and an outer row of medallions.

Inside the church, the chancel arch is also adorned with zigzag decoration and the corbel table now in the north aisle is sited on what was once an exterior wall.

There is an uneven step down into the church. Limited parking is available in the lay-by next to the church. Please be careful as there are several obscured changes in floor level inside the church.

Due to the historic nature of our buildings, only a very small number of them have heating, running water and toilet facilities.The lighting is usually operated via a 'push button' timer or a motion sensor.
