About this Church
A church on the edge of England
This remote, whitewashed church on the Welsh border lies in an idyllic valley setting by the River Monnow.
The church is said to have been founded by a Celtic saint, St Ridol, and the dedication to St John the Baptist is thought to date from the Norman period. Rescued from ruin in 1921, it has a beautiful rustic Medieval interior.
The nave has a twelfth-century window in its north wall, while the other windows here are from the fourteenth century. The impressive south window in the chancel is clearly later, probably dating from around 1400.

Access information
Along two sides of a field on a grassy track from the lane to a level gravel path in the churchyard leading to the North chancel door. Generally flat by the edge of the field is slippery in wet conditions.
Level access to the wide west door. There is one step down to the nave. The church is a considerable distance across a field from the road, with little parking.
Facilities & Hire
Due to the historic nature of our buildings, only a very small number of them have facilities. This church has no electricity or toilets.
It has an open area in the chancel which is ideal for performances and has fixed pew seating.

5 miles north west of Monmouth; Llanrothal signed off A466 at Welsh Newton, further signed at junction to Tregate Bridge; follow brown 'historic church' tourism sign; access to church via farm gate and rough track across field. Do not drive across the field on wet days as it gets very muddy, so park near the road and take your wellies.

Nearest railway station: Abergavenny (10.7 miles). Bus route numbers 54/416.
